Celtic New Year

On this Celtic New Year, I am greeting you with Love and Gratitude for your Being and for your Earthly Presence – Namaste!

I thought of each of you warmly this morning as I reflected on today’s reading from the daybook I have been using, Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach, “Make Room for Mystery, Awaken to the Magic.”  I have always secretly believed in magic finding affirmation of its existence in the writings of C.S. Lewis, Watership Down, the Hobbit stories, as well as the Harry Potter stories.  Coincidentally, magic has been a theme of my inner work for several weeks and I was surprised to find it in today’s reading.  While always believing in ‘magic,’ it is just in the last few years that I dared to allow that belief to come more into my aware consciousness.  And, to my delight, I am finding that I am not the only human who believes in magic and further delighted to discover the Divinity of Magic as well as its association with the Natural Realm.  So today’s reading has offered me yet another piece of ‘magic.’

It is with a full heart that I am moved to share it with you with the hope that you find within you the affirmation and the acceptance with which it is sent.  Many blessings…

“To work magic is to weave the unseen forces into form, to soar beyond sight, to explore the uncharted dream realm of the hidden reality.”  Starhawk

“…Halloween comes down to us from the pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, held October 31, the last autumn night before the cold and bleakness of winter.  On this night—considered the Celtic New Year—the Druids believed that the supernatural world drew closer to the physical world, so human beings were more susceptible to the power and influence of the unseen.  Magic spells could be cast more easily, divination (predicting fortunes) was more revealing, and dreams held special significance.

“Being Celtic, I still believe this.  Being human, I believe Halloween is the perfect reminder that magic flows through us, mystery infuses every encounter of every day.  We conjure up the shoe that cannot be found anywhere in the house, transform leftovers into a feast, coax bounty from the barren earth, banish fear, heal hurts, make money stretch till the end of the month.  We carry, cradle, nurture, and sustain life.  We do all this and much more.  But most women are not consciously awakened to the realization that we are descendants of an ancient, sacred lineage:  the She.

“Isn’t magic what you’re performing when you are creating an authentic lifestyle for yourself and those you love?  Aren’t you shaping unseen forces with your creativity and soulcrafts, bringing into the physical world through passion what has only existed in the spiritual realm?  If you can do this unconsciously, how much more could you accomplish if you were fully aware of your powers!

“O daughter of the She, much power has been gifted you.  It is the power of Love.  Tonight by candlelight or by the light of the full moon in your backyard, commit to use your power wisely for the Highest Good or All.  You have no idea of the countless lives you touch in the course of your lifetime.  Souls searching for Wholeness that could be healed with the magic at your command.  Go directly to the Source.  Acknowledge your lineage and your authentic gifts with a grateful heart…and on this night of magic, by candlelight or moonlight,”… commit to bringing your own unique, beautiful magic into form in this present incarnation.

Happy weaving, ecstatic soaring, and awe-inspiring exploring of those uncharted realms….

With love,

My Heart Thrills

I have never shared with any one what I am sharing here so please bear with me if I seem to go on a little too much, if I do it is simply to allow words to get as close to my level of inner joy of these experiences as possible.

For as long as I can remember my heart thrills as I listen to the songs of birds, the whirr of cicadas, crickets, grasshoppers, the stirrings of wind, the timpani of thunder, the crack of lightning, the rustle of fallen leaves as I purposely shuffle through them to amplify the sound, the gurgles of streams on their way to rivers, the croak of the bullfrog and the song of tree frogs, the snorting and rooting around of animals as they find their food and make a comfortable resting place, and even when laying on the ground hearing the diminutive sounds made by unseen entities, and oh, the crackles and pops that come from a fire, the unique sound of the wind as it passes through evergreens then cottonwoods or maples or oaks, the fluttering of a moths wings, buzzzzzing of bees as they gather pollen from first one blossom then another….I could go on. And the silence when no sounds from humans can be heard and any sounds of nature are indiscernible…I can rest in that silence.  These sounds along with the scents of soil, tree bark, grass, flowers, rain, tomato plants and honeysuckle (to name a few); the brushing of the wind on my face, the sun as it warms my body, the texture of stones and leaves; the variety of colors, shapes, designs, and variations of each of them combining
into myriad patterns to please the eye.

I have never understood why so few people I have met experience a similar inner response as mine to all of these communiqués.  Instead I hear: “I wish the wind would quit blowing,” “The stupid birds singing woke me up,” “I hate the sound of the locusts,” “It’s too quiet.”

The sounds, scents, textures, visual variety of the natural world are here to interact with us, to calm us, to inspire us, to comfort us, to help us let go of whatever it is that is an irritant to our soul, to motivate us to live a little more fully and authentically.

As David Abram lifts up in his book The Spell of the Sensuous, the “magic” available to each human is in altering one’s common state of consciousness “precisely in order to make contact with the other organic forms of sensitivity and awareness with which human existence is entwined.”  I personally have always believed in the existence of magic and it is Mr. Abram’s definition of magic that most resonates with me: “Magic…is the experience of existing in a world made up of multiple intelligences, the intuition that every form one perceives–from the swallow swooping overhead to the fly on a blade of grass, and indeed the blade of grass itself–is an experiencing form, an entity with its own predilections and sensations, albeit sensations that are very different from our own.”

I am inviting you to experience magic in your day, every day. May your life be full and your heart thrilled.

12 Principles For Understanding the Universe and the Role of the Human in the Universe Process

Thomas Berry

1.     The Universe, the solar system, and the planet Earth in themselves and in their evolutionary emergence constitute for the human community the primary revelation of that ultimate mystery whence all things emerge into being.

2.     The Universe is a unity, an interacting and genetically-related community of beings bound together in an inseparable relationship in space and time.  The unity of the planet Earth is especially clear:  each being of the planet is profoundly implicated in the existence and functioning of every other being of the planet.

3.     From its beginning the Universe is a psychic as well as physical reality.

4.     The three basic laws of the Universe at all levels of reality are differentiation, subjectivity and communion.  These laws identify the reality, the values and the directions in which the Universe is proceeding.

5.     The Universe has a violent as well as a harmonious aspect, but it is consistently creative in the larger arc of its development.

6.     The human is that being in whom the Universe activates, reflects upon and celebrates itself in conscious self-awareness.

7.     Earth, within the solar system, is a self-emergent, self-propagating, self-nourishing, self-educating, self-governing, self-healing, self-fulfilling community.  All particular life systems in their being, their sexuality, their nourishment, their education, their governing, their healing, their fulfillment, must integrate their functioning within this larger complex of mutually dependent Earth systems.

8.     The genetic coding process is the process through which the world of the living articulates itself in its being and its activities.  The great wonder is the creative interaction of the multiple codings among themselves.

9.     At the human level, genetic coding mandates a further trans-genetic cultural coding by which specifically human qualities find expression.  Cultural coding is carried on by educational processes.

10.   The emergent process of the Universe is irreversible and non-repeatable in the existing world order.  The movement from non-life to life on Earth is a one time event.  So too, the movement from life to human form of consciousness.  So also, the transition from the earlier to the later forms of human culture.

11.   The historical sequence of cultural periods can be identified as the tribal-shamanic period, the Neolithic village period, the classical civilization period, the scientific-technological period and the emerging ecological period.

12.   The main human task of the immediate future is to assist in activating the inter-communion of all the living and non-living components of Earth’s community in what can be considered the emerging ecological period of Earth’s development.

A Prayer to Humankind

Hear, O Humankind, the prayer of my heart.earth and candles for prayer

For are we not one, have we not one desire,
to heal our Mother Earth and bind her wounds?
And still to be free as the spotted Eagle climbing
the laughing breath of our Father Sky,
to hear again from dark forests and flashing rivers the varied ever-changing Song of Creation?

O Humankind, are we not all brothers and sisters, are we not the grandchildren of the Great Mystery?  Do we not all want to love and be loved, to work and to play, to sing and dance together? But we live with fear.  Fear that is hate, fear that is ambition, competition, aggression, fear that is loneliness, anger, bitterness, cruelty, fear that is mistrust, envy, greed, vanity…and yet, fear is only twisted love, love turned back on itself, love that was denied, love that was rejected.

And love…love is life…creation, seed and leaf and blossom and fruit and seed, love is growth and search and reach and touch and dance, love is nurture and succor and feed and pleasure, love is pleasuring ourselves, pleasuring each other, love is life believing in itself.

And life…life is the Sacred Mystery singing to itself, dancing to its drum, telling stories, improvising, playing and we are all that Spirit, our stories tell but one cosmic story that we are loved indeed, that perfect love we seek we are already, the love in me seeks the love in you, and if our eyes could ever meet without fear we would recognize each other and rejoice, for love is life believing in itself.

O Humankind, we must stop fearing life, fearing each other, we must absolutely stop hating ourselves, resenting Creation ~ Life.

O Humankind, life is the only treasure.  We are the custodians of it, it is our sacred trust.  Life is wondrous, awesome and holy, a burning glory, and its price is simply this: Courage, we must be brave enough to love.

Hear my heart’s prayer, O Humankind, trust in love, don’t be afraid.   I love you as I love life, I love myself, please love me too, love yourself, for perfect love, as a wise one said, casts out all fear. If we are to live, there is no other choice, for love is life believing in itself.

Above all, let us set the children free, break the traps of fear that history has fashioned for them, free to grow, to seek and question, to dance and sing, to be dreamers of tomorrow’s rainbows, and if we but give them our trust hey will guide us to a New Creation, for love is life believing in itself.

Hear, O Humankind, the prayer of my heart.

Earth Prayer

earth prayer star field image
O Endless Creator, Force of Life, Seat of the Unconscious,
Dharma, Atman, Ra, Qalb, Dear Center of our Love,
Christlight, Yaweh, Allah, Mawu,
Mother of the Universe…

Let us, when swimming with the stream,
become the stream…
Let us, when moving with the music,
become the music…
Let us, when rocking the wounded,
become the suffering…

Let us live deep enough
till there is only one direction…
and slow enough till there is only
the beginning of time…
and loud enough in our hearts
till there is no need to speak…

Let us live for the grace beneath all we want,
let us see it in everything and everyone,
till we admit to the mystery
that when I look deep enough into you,
I find me, and when you dare to hear my fear
in the recess of your heart, you recognize it
as your secret which you thought
no one else knew…

O let us embrace
that unexpected moment of unity
as the atom of God…
Let us have the courage
to hold each other when we break
and worship what unfolds…

O nameless spirit that is not done with us,
let us love without a net
beyond the fear of death
until the speck of peace
we guard so well
becomes the world…
